Know the facts before going out for dharna

Dear Editor,

The Galo Students’ Organization (GSU) staged a dharna Friday in front of the CM’s bungalow with demands for creation of Lower Siang district, up-gradation of district hospital at Aalo to General Hospital, infrastructure development of DPGC Kamki etc.

It is reliably learnt that the GoAP has already initiated steps on issues raised by the GSU for early redressal and immediate action. I would like to put forth some facts about the GSU demands.

As per available official records, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has repeatedly assured to create the Lower Siang district in his tenure.

It is a fact that the Longding district was created during the tenure of then Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin. Both files for creation of two new districts - Lower Siang and Longding were placed before the house. While Longding district was approved but decision on creation of Lower Siang district was kept in abeyance.

Where were GSU and GWS at that time? Why they didn’t raise any objection or protest like today? Who is masterminding such dharna? Is it being organized on behalf of some vested persons ? It is best known to those who are behind it?

Did they (GSU) ever adopt a resolution in their last conference at Telam? Or did they ever meet or submit any memorandum to the GoAP on these issues? If the GSU has not adopted any resolution or submit representation to the present GoAP, how could they give ultimatum to GoAP and stage a dharna? Would it not amount to misuse the organization and mislead the youths?

It is further learnt that the GoAP has already sanctioned Rs 60 lakh for construction of an auditorium with additional Rs 40 lakh for construction of type-III quarters from education department. Under major works project Rs 80.71 lakh has been sanctioned for infrastructure of DPGC Kamki under TFC whereas DNGC Itanagar got only Rs 36.20 lakh from same project.

Therefore, the question of step-motherly treatment of the GoAP to DPGC Kamki does not arise. Such misleading views should not be given in the name of any community.

It is a fact that the GoAP has been positive in many cases, like up-gradation of district hospital to General Hospital, revival of Nigmoi fruit processing unit and Pakarijo-Gogamukh NEC road under process. Moreover, many developments activities for Galo inhibited areas were discussed during the last meeting between the representatives of the GWS with the CM at CM bungalow.

Now it is up to the society, students’ organization and elected legislators to avail the generosity of present CM.

Therefore, I don’t find any valid reason for serving ultimatum to the GoAP and holding a dhama on Nov 16. I would suggest the students’ organization not to repeat such mistakes in future without winning the confidence of the entire students’ community as well as society before taking up any democratic movement on the ground that dharna or protest is a constitutional rights.

Yours,

Domin Loya,

Former chief adviser, GSU

A slap on the face of humanity

Dear Editor,

It is a very unfortunate incident that young and energetic 2012 batch APCS cadre Gyamar Amte, Koloriang CO,  who agreed to work for the society even after facing all odds in far flung district -- Kurung Kumey and tried to make home away from home, had been severely physically assaulted by some miscreants at Inspection Bungalow, Koloriang recently. It is unfortunate from my side to ask the dwellers of Kurung Kumey district that, is it the way to welcome the young, and energetic officer in Kurung Kumey district who came to serve your people in particular and state as a whole. I also welcome lavish condemnation from all sections of the society but it is not known yet as to why NES and ANSU are  still silent on the issue. I would like to urge the NES and ANSU to come forward and act to provide justice to the victim by pressuring state government for immediate arrest of the culprits and to give them stringent punishment. I would also like to urge the state government, particularly the administration of Kurung Kumey district to form special investigation committee headed by not less than a rank of SP so as to unearth the mystery and solve the case at the earliest. I would also like to request our state government to provide sufficient relief and arrange for a high quality treatment to the victim.

This is a direct example of a clean slap on the face of democracy and humanity. This can be termed as the most barbaric act in a modern world. This is not a sign of civilized society, and of course, not the legacy our forefathers in a democratic country have hoped for. Therefore, it is in the interest of every one of us, irrespective of religion, region, caste, tribe and gender, to build and nurture a society with such system which can efficiently deliver welfare services that is predictable, valid and reliable. This will act as a perpetual insurance for secured future not only for us but for our siblings too.

Yours’

National Press Day celebrated

• Educate people on role of media: APC

• Accept the challenges: Tuki

ITANAGAR, Nov 16: The National Press Day was celebrated with sombre mood at Banquet Hall here today. Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, Padmashree Mamang Dai,  Secretary IPR Indra Mallo Jain and  large number of press persons, students and common citizens joined together for the celebration.

Setting the tone for the day, the president of Arunachal Press Club (APC) Taba Ajum made an emotional appeal to the members present to educate their relatives, friends and  general people about the role of media.

“You are aware that this year has been a tough one for the Press fraternity of the state. The year witnessed repeated attack on media houses of the state capital besides intimidation and threats to the journalists.  Of them, the assassination attempt on The Arunachal Times Associate Editor and President of Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists Tongam Rina has deeply shocked the Press persons not here in Arunachal Pradesh alone but globally,” stated Ajum. He added, “In true sense, the Press fraternity is still striving hard to come out from the trauma caused by the incident. The wound is too deep to be healed easily. The recent attack on Echo of Arunachal office and its associate editor Tapan Das has once again created the hostile atmosphere under which the Press persons have to work.”

“Though we are facing problem on many fronts, I, on behalf of the entire Press fraternity, would like to assure the people of Arunachal that no matter how hard the elements may try, they can’t make us voiceless. I can confidently say that we will not be coerced or intimidated by elements hell-bent on influencing the Fourth pillar of democracy. I also assure that Press will remain the voice for voiceless,” stated Ajum.

Expressing happiness over the ever-growing media fraternity in the state despite various hurdles, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki revealed that he had a long association with the Press since the early days of his political career and knows how a Press as an institution works, suffers or blossoms.

Since the Arunachalee society is in a transition phase both socially and politically, the role of media in a sensitive border state like Arunachal Pradesh inhabited by numerous tribal communities still deep-rooted to their cultural mooring at a time when modernity is spreading fast with its scientific outlook is huge, he added. Accepting that in a multi-ethnic society like ours - burdened by political, economical and social maneuvers, it often gets difficult for the media to play its role as it should, he asked the media fraternity to stand up and accept the challenges that are sure to come by.

Quoting a common English saying that goes “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going”, he said journalists are like soldiers and they must be tough and tough times should toughen them more. The CM  asked them to be more vigorous, energetic and determined.

“As Chief Minister of the state, I am with you. My earnest appeal to you all is that never think that the Government is not concerned about your welfare and safety. This is your government and you are all stakeholders like every citizen of the state,” he added.

He further asked the media to be the eyes and ears of the government and mirror the grievances of the people without any fear and favour and cautioned them against any unsubstantiated allegations, sensationalization and vulgarity. “As you are the eyes and ears of the Government, I look forward to your constructive criticisms, suggestions and solutions so that my commitment to deliver a common man’s government is fulfilled”, he  said.

Recalling her days as a journalist when they used to organize the National Press Day in R.K Mission hall, Padmashree Mamang Dai, an eminent writer herself said  its always been an uphill task for the media fraternity as it comes with a lot of responsibilities. Lauding their efforts, she said that despite the increasing attacks they are making a growing impact.

Let us see ourselves as part of a larger team where Press is one of the pillars and the Government is the other pillar, said Indra Mallo Jain, Secy IPR and asked both to maintain a healthy working relationship. The resistant that you face is an indirect assessment that you are making an impact, it shows that your voice counts, she added.

Tongam Rina shooting case

Media urges GoAP to clarify

ITANAGAR, Nov 16: The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) and the Arunachal Press Club (APC) have called upon the state government to clarify the status of July 15 Tongam Rina shooting case.

There are contradictory reports from different quarters in this regard. While some sources claimed that the CBI has declined to accept the case, there was no intimation to this effect to both the Press bodies, including from IGP Sanjay Baniwal, who had assured to inform about the status of the case.

During an hour-long discussion with the editors, publishers and representatives of both bodies on November 10 last the IGP had however clarified that the process of taking over the case by CBI is lengthy.

When contacted today, the IGP informed that “We are yet to receive any official communiqué in this regard and on receipt of same it would be made known.”

Capital SP Surender Kumar also conveyed the same message.

The confusing situation is creating lot of misgiving, and therefore the APUWJ and the APC exhorted the state government to issue clarification immediately.

Freedom of expression chained in Arunachal Pradesh’

ITANAGAR, Nov 16:  After a hot debate by equally forceful speakers and opponents, the audience through voice voted the motion - Freedom of expression chained in Arunachal Pradesh, with few opponents raising hands by silently supporting it.

Speaker Jarjum Ete, a prominent social activist, rounded up the debate at the Press Day celebration by highlighting the social milieu of the ethnic-rich state caught in the socio-economic and political compulsions that had chained the freedom of expression of the people.

Till adequate awareness about the rights enshrined in the Constitution among the masses, thinking of freedom of expression would remain next to impossible what to talk of media the medium of people’s expression, she reasoned. Media being controlled by corporate bodies, state players and forceful group is an established fact today like that of yellow journalism and Arunachal Pradesh is no exception, she rued, adding that still there was hope for a better tomorrow if the society come together to speak univocally to create an environment for freedom of expression.

While Saurav Mitra and Debananda Medak, both of RGU, were adjudged Best Debater and the runner-up to win the Chief Minister’s running shield and trophy respectively besides citation and cash award each, RGU was chosen as the best debater team and NERIST the runner-up.

“Media is not a glamorous profession,” opined senior journalist Taro Chatung while his colleague Pradeep Kumar said: “A society gets a media it deserves”.

“Don’t paint a gloomy picture of state media to discourage the aspiring journalists”, said advocate Pritam Taffo. Senior journalist Ravindran supported him saying: “The attacks were by anti-socials and we would continue to work for the society”.

Family planning and economic development

Increased access to family planning has proven to be a sound economic investment. One third of the growth of Asian economies is attributed to a demographic shift in which the number of income-generating adults became higher than those who depended on them for support. This shift, according to report - the State of World Population 2012, published by UNFPA, was a consequence of family planning and brought increased productivity, leading to economic development in the region.

The report finds that the costs of ignoring the right to family planning include poverty, exclusion, poor health and gender inequality. Failing to meet the sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents and young people in Malawi, for example, contributed to high rates of unintended pregnancy and HIV. In the United States, the report showed that teenage motherhood reduces a girl’s chances of obtaining a high school diploma by up to 10 per cent.

Family planning delivers immeasurable rewards to women, families, and communities around the world. By enabling individuals to choose the number and spacing of their children, family planning has allowed women, and their children, to live healthier, longer lives.

The State of World Population 2012 says that governments, civil society, health providers and communities have the responsibility to protect the right to family planning for women across the spectrum, including those who are young or unmarried.

To ensure that every person’s right to family planning is realized, the report also calls on governments and leaders to take or reinforce a rights-based approach to family planning and secure an emphasis on family planning in the global sustainable development agenda that will follow the Millennium Development Goals in 2015.
